Skin cancer starts in the top skin layer (epidermis), spreading deeper over time if left untreated. The three most common types of skin cancer are named after cell types contained in the epidermis:
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer. BCC is found mainly in areas regularly exposed to the sun, including the face, head, and neck. It may appear as a waxy bump, a flat scar-like lesion, or a sore that heals and returns.
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) also tends to occur on sun-exposed skin, such as the face, head, ears, hands, neck, and mouth. SCC may appear as a firm, red bump or a scaly or crusty skin lesion.
Melanoma can occur anywhere, even under the toenails or fingernails. It may appear as an irregularly shaped skin lesion containing varying shades of brown, black, pink, or red speckles. The lesions are sometimes painful or itchy.
